APOSTOLATES

The Jesuits who arrived in Nagaland in 1970 began with the educational apostolate — concentrating on elementary and secondary education. Evangelization and parish ministry was part and parcel of the educational apostolate. The social apostolate took a definitive shape in the late 1990s with the starting of Gana Chetana Samaj, for starting and co-ordinating the functioning of Self-Help Groups. In 2000, the North Eastern Social Research Centre (NESRC) was established in Guwahati, and, in 2007, the Legal Cell for Human Rights (LCHR). These ventures gave a solid shape to the social apostolate of the region. Religious formation, retreats and renewal programmes are being offered through the Jesuit Institute of Religious Formation (JIRF).
